When I first picked out these cards the first thing that came to mind was “isn’t being a bartender already something that your mother would hate?” I deemed it so and then moved onto brainstorming inventions that even the most laid-back mother would look twice at.
I thought through devices that were sharp, that shot things, that made loud noises, that held liquor, and more. When brainstorming I made sure to create devices that served a practical function for a bartender; I wanted to make items that were USEFUL.
On the top right is my first idea: the combination wine bottle opener and tattoo gun. I thought that a wine bottle opener was the perfect candidate for this challenge because it shared the same needle sharp point as a tattoo gun. I know for a fact that my mother does not like tattoos. While I will admit that this is not the most practical combination, I thought that it was a fun novelty item.
The top left of the above photo looks like a shot glass with a tumor on the bottom but it actually is a lemon/lime squeezer. I thought that this addition would be perfect for a bartender because they could use the shot glass to drink from or to measure for cocktails while squeezing fresh juice into their concoctions. The fact that the glass has a round bottom (therefore making it impossible to be set down) I view as a plus. With this, the bartender will never be able to put a drink down, he must take the shot immediately after pouring!
The middle sketch is of a sharp knife that a bartender would use to cut fruit or fend off unruly customers. The knife has a bottle opener incorporated and a easy to grip handle.
The bottom left sketch is for the portable bartender, a gun that pre-mixes drinks! Containing swappable and refillable cartridges, the gun can be customized to a particular drink or series of drinks. The cocking mechanism switches between mixes in a predetermined pattern.
The final sketch is of a device that would allow bartenders to block their mothers from following them on “find my friends” and other GPS locator apps. This would help keep the mothers in the dark about their children being bartenders.
I first tried to draw the shot glass in two-point perspective but I quickly realized that I needed more practice with this drawing technique. I post my failed attempt here (circles are hard to draw).
I considered redrawing the shot glass but I realized it would be hard to draw it in different orientations because it is a very simple object. I decided that I would use the knife as my drawing subject. However, I made a modification to the knife design. I decided that as long as the knife was slicing fruit, it could also juice the fruit. So I added a fruit juicer to the end of the knife and moved the bottle opener to the top of the blade.
The detail drawing here shows the blade detailing, bottle opener, and handle while including more information about the knife itself.
My two favorite (and most realistic) ideas are the knife and the shot glass. I think that the shot glass is a really cool concept, something that I would definitely like to prototype. I think the idea of a round bottomed shot glass has a nice novelty to it.
