CNC: Earth!

For the CNC homework, I decided to carve a globe using the Carvey. I picked this because I thought it would be interesting to see how much detail the machine could produce and I thought it would be look interesting after I painted the continents and ocean.

I used a .svg file from the Noun Project which is shown below. I chose this one over other globe images because it had a high level of detail and showed most of the continents.

Figure 1. Globe from Noun Project

I chose to mill the outlines of the continents and cut the circle out of a larger, rectangular piece of wood. First, I milled the outline of the continents with a 1/16th in up-cut bit.  Then I vacuumed the excess sawdust and without removing the material, changed the bit to a longer 1/8th in up-cut bit to cut through the whole piece of wood and removed the circle from the bulk material. I experienced no problems with the Carvey or my file, which took 30 minutes total to print. The piece after being cut is shown in Figure 2.

Next, I sanded down the edges of the piece and removed leftover dust from the interior cuts. Then, I carefully painted the ocean regions with blue acrylic paint. After, I painted the continent with a dark green paint that I made form light green and black. This paint was washable so I had to apply many coats but in the end it was cool to see some texture in the green regions. The final product is below.

Figure 3. Final Product

This product took me a total of 2 hours to create the file on Easel, cut the shape, and complete post-processing. Working at $12 per hour, the total cost would be $24. For the raw materials, I used scrap book which I would charge $3 for and very little amount of paint for $1. I am assuming that I have free access to the Carvey machine. Therefore, the total cost of this product is $28.00.
