Dylan: Why I’m Taking ENGI 210

Hi, I’m Dylan and I’m a junior mechanical engineering major from Baker! I’m originally from Waco, TX.

At Rice I’m involved with Rice Eclipse, our rocketry club, where I’m currently the airframe subteam lead, designing the club’s rocket to compete at the 2021 Spaceport America Cup collegiate rocketry competition.  Outside of engineering related activities, I also am a member of the Rice Philharmonics, a coed a cappella group at Rice; we perform throughout Rice, Houston, and even throughout the country on occasion. Finally, I play intramural soccer for Baker (although COVID has canceled this year and last year’s soccer tournament, Baker has technically won the last 2 years of Rice IM soccer).

One thing I’ve made that I’m proud of is my own rocket freshman year. Before college, I had been passionate about aerospace and interested in rocketry but never had the opportunity to really pursue that interest, so being able to finally build a 5 foot tall rocket that went over 1000 feet in the air was really cool.

One thing I would like to make in the future is some type of existing musical instrument using unconventional materials and methods (for example, maybe a 3D-printed violin or guitar).

I’ve used many of the tools in the OEDK, but some only once or a few times, like the CNC and the plasma cutter. In ENGI 210, I’m looking forward to continuing to gain experience in using all of the tools, and learning new applications for them.
