Planning
For this project, the bulk of my time was spent planning. This time was divided across pattern making, ironing, pinning and making adjustments. I created my own pattern that fit my dimensions and replicated the pattern on paper to cut out the fabric precisely. I pinned in all of the sides with a 1/2″ seam allowance. I also created a flared pocket pattern and prepared the pocket to be sewn.
Sewing
Using the OEDK Singer sewing machines, I stitched my apron together, added the pocket and added straps. I was unable to find navy blue thread to match the color of the apron body, so I opted for a grey thread and made sure to keep my stitches very neat. I also decided against using a box stitch for the straps because I will not be using this apron often and the box stitch would create a rougher appearance from the front. Instead, to fasted the straps to the apron, I lined up the stitches to my original border stitching to attach the straps.
Improvements
If I were to make another apron, similar to this one, I would likely have opted to create a double-sided apron so that there wasn’t an “unfinished” side with all of the seams. I also would also hand-stitch the strap material onto the apron so that the stitching is cleaner.
Cost Analysis
Below I have estimated the cost to make this apron. I did not include the cost of the sewing machine, as I used the OEDK’s and had I sewed the machine at home I would use my own machine.
Labor: 6 hours x $20/hour = $120
Thread: ~$2
1 yard of fabric: ~$10
60″ of strap fabric: ~$3
Total cost: $140
