This week we had to 3D print 5 identical impossible objects with two different methods of 3D printing.
I decided to go with the “Stochastic Easter Eggs” on Thingiverse.
I used the FDM first. Since all the FDM machines with PLA were occupied when I got to OEDK, I tried using the one with TPU, but the material wasn’t coming out once I started it. I asked the TAs and other lab assistants as well but unfortunately I wasn’t able to figure out what was wrong. So I just waited for one of the PLA machine and printed out four eggs first. I scaled the original file down to 40% on PrusaSlicer. Luke helped me determine the appropriate amount of supports needed, since the automatically generated ones had too much internal supports.
The first four were successfully printed out without any iterations needed 🙂 The supports were also very easy to remove.
Then I printed out the last one with SLA. I downloaded the PreForm software on my laptop and uploaded my file there. After scaling it down to 40% and adjusting the supports again, I sent the file to the OEDK computer and put mine on queue. Once I came back by the time it should have been done, someone told me my object was broken and thrown away. So I put on queue again, and finally was able to get it printed.
Then I washed and cured my final piece of egg, and removed the supports.
Cost Analysis
- PLA filament: $0.3 x 4 = $1.2 (Amazon)
- resin: $0.6 (Amazon)
- labor: $13 x 4 = $52
- total: $53.8
