I started my project by getting inspiration from an online pattern called the Sam Apron by Helen’s Closet. I then sketched out my ideas and figured out the measurements based on my size. I adjusted my measurements slightly to fit the provided fabric.
After I cut out the fabric based on my measurements. To add some flare, I wanted white bias tape on the curved section of both sides of my apron. To do this I took white scrap fabric and cut out two strips the length and width of a ruler at a 45-degree angle to the selvage end. This gives it the most stretch allowing it to conform to my curved cuts. I folded it in half and pinned it to the curved sides.
I was now ready to sew. With a 3/8 inch seam allowance, I sewed the bias tape to the curved edges. I then hemmed all the other sides by folding over 1/4 inch twice on the back side and pinning my folds. With a 1/4 inch allowance, I sewed all my pinned sides to complete the hem.
To add the straps, I fitted, cut, and pinned ribbons to act as a neck strap and two side straps to tie around my waist. I then did a box stitch on the backside where the ribbon ends met my apron. To finish I cut off any loose thread, turned off the sewing machine, and cleaned up my workspace.
Here is the final product and my clean workspace:
