Building a Crate

Hi everyone! Reece and I worked on creating our crate for our EDES 210 assignment. My partner was interested in the idea of doing diagonal wood design which I found very cool.

Reece sketched a 3D model since we needed to cut our own with dimensions and angles that we assigned.

So, this model is designed according to all the dimension restrictions but we just diagonal cut woods on two sides + 2 2×2 on top to connect the diagonals while using a horizontal on the other sides.

Since we didn’t use any pre-cut wood, we had to make sure that all of our pieces were good enough for the assembly. That’s why we assembled the crate as we cut pieces one by one with the drill to ensure they fit together perfectly. We started with base by cutting three pieces and connecting them. Then we moved on with short 4 2×2 which are vertical columns. Then we continued with top 2 2×2 pieces and lastly the diagonals.

Throughout our progress, we had to disassemble few times when the pieces didn’t fit together. We used belt sander to change the length or the shape of our wood to overcome this problem or we used milter saw to cut new pieces.

At the end, we painted the crate with black spray paint.
