Karla’s Denim Apron

Pre-Work:

For my apron, I knew I wanted something more sturdy than just the black sheet given. Because of this, I went to Michael’s and bought denim fabric for $6/yard.

I began by creating a template of what my apron needed to look like. I made many adjustments to the dimensions of my apron until I found the perfect one.

I wanted a 16 inch zippered pocket, a normal 16 inch pocket sewn in the middle to make 2 pockets, and a cute small pocket on the top.

Part 1: Base

To begin, I started by using chalk to outline my pattern + a 2 inch allowance. I did this for both my denim fabric, and the black fabric given to us. I used the black fabric for the inside and denim for the outside

I continued on by cutting this out and beginning to fold the outer edges twice. I used the iron to lay the edges down flat to make it easier to sew. It was a bit of a hassle to fold the corners because thats where the fabric was the thickest and I wanted a 45 degree edge.

Once finished, I began to sew the pieces together using the industrial sewing machine since my fabric was thicker. I used black thread to make my mistakes easier to hide. I ran into an issue at one of the edges. My fabric was too thick for the machine, so I had to hand sew the rest together.

Other than that, it was pretty smooth sailing. The finished fabric looked so good!

Part 2: Pockets

I began with the zippered pocket because the length of the zipper was a constraint since I wanted the 2nd pocket to match the length of it. I followed a youtube tutorial and it came out so nice! I didn’t end up attaching the zippered pocket due to time constraints and the machine being broken but I will add to it later.

Part 3: Finishing Touches

I used some more of my denim fabric to create the straps and ties. I used a 4×24 inch piece for the strap and a 5×30 inch piece for each of the side straps
