Louis’s Apron

For the past two weeks I’ve been studying and making an Apron.

Since I had no prior experience with a sewing machine, I followed the process and templates in ‘Beginner Level Assignment’.

Starting with the fabric cut to the template’s specifications, I based on my typical clothing choices trimmed the fabric roughly to a L size and added an extra 2 inches all around to account for side folded sewing and mistakes in the construction.

I side folded sewn around the fabric in the second stage and included the neck strap. This phase ensures the fabric that must be sewed together using safety pins so as to prevent movement of the fabrics. On my first try, I neglected this approach, hence I had to redo all the side folded sewing later. After some consideration, I created a really broad neck strap from some of the coloured fabric from the scrap box, which turned out to be a major comfort improvement. (For some technical reason the neck strap image was lost)

The back straps follow, two of which are fashioned similarly to the neck strap but I folded and sewed the fabric twice. These let the back straps to be thicker, and will help you to attach and release the back straps more easily in the situation of working with gloves. The material of back straps is the cutting down scrap of the apron body.

Finally, the back straps are fixed by the Box style (btw the neck strap also attatched by this pattern), pre-marking where sewing needs to take place helped me a lot.

Finally, my apron is almost complete.

Had a fitting after finishing trimming all the edges and threads and it fit me perfectly!

As a side note, the class a fortnight ago was my first exposure to the Sewing machine, and it looks like I’m doing pretty well.
