This week we learned how to make molds in preparation for our final project. I started out by measuring out the ingredients to make the negative of my figure:
Next, I mixed the liquid until it was a consistency I was happy with and held my finger in it for around 5 minutes. Looking back I wish I put my finger in deeper in order to get a larger mold. he is the negative of my finger:
After that, I was able to pore the plaster into the negative and add the screw in order to complete my finger. I had to make my own jig for one of the screws as all the actual ones were being used:
Once I let this cure overnight, I removed them and put them on a box to be spray painted. Below is a before and after I used the blue spray paint and clear coat:
After I was done I cleaned up the table:
Cost Analysis:
Alginate– 9.3 ounces at ~$0.40 an ounce – 3.72
Plaster – 0.28 lbs at $1.24 a pound – $0.35
Spray Paint – negligible
Wood Screw x 2 at $0.06 – $0.12
Total – $4.19 ($2.1 per piece)
