CNC Machining: Pie

For the CNC Machining Lab, the ENGI 210 class was tasked with machining a logo from the Noun Project into a block of wood.

I decided to machine a logo of a pie into into my block. I’m not entirely sure why I chose to do this, but I am happy with the end result of the lab.

To create the G-code required to use the CNC Machine, I imported my logo into Easel, a simple CNC machining program. I chose to carve my image with a 1/8in rounded drill bit at a depth of 1/8in. This seemed like the perfect depth that would not take too long to machine on the CNC machine

Next, I chose to post-process my block of wood before machining it. I stained my very light block of wood a deep mahogany brown. By doing this I hoped to create an interesting contrast between the surface of my wood block and the pie image machined into the block.

After my stain had dried, I exported my G-code from Easel and used the Flashcut CNC Mill at the OEDK. My G-code worked perfectly on the first try. The cut took a little over 20 minutes to complete.

Overall, I was very pleased with the outcome and enjoyed working with the CNC Mill.
