Elisa takes on ENGI 210

Hi! My name is Elisa Arango and I am a senior from Martel College majoring in Psychology and minoring in Engineering Design and in Global Health Technologies. I am a member of the women’s club soccer team and have also played violin in the Campanile Orchestra in previous years. During my free time, I enjoy running and learning languages. Right now, I am working on Italian.

My first experience working on a design team was during my GLHT 360 class freshman year. It was through this class that I become ‘hooked’ on design and decided to pursue more related coursework. For this reason, the project I worked on during GLHT 360 is one of the things I am most proud of making while at Rice.

The challenge posed was to design an interactive physical training model for patients to practice ostomy bag application and stoma care before their surgery. Our solution was a 3D printed stoma on a belt that allows users to interchange differently sized stomas, practice stoma irrigation, and providse feedback for ostomy bag and wafer application.

Our finalized, interactive colostomy care training model.

One thing I’d like to make someday is a replica of Gerrit Rietveld’s Red Blue Chair. Last semester, I took a course on the aesthetics and history of design. I absolutely loved the course and found the  section  about  this  chair particularly interesting. I’ve found the original measurements online, so I think building a replica would be a fun activity.

The Red Blue Chair.

Through ENGI 210, I hope to become comfortable with using all the tools at the OEDK. I also hope to become proficient in Adobe Illustrator and with 3D printing.
