Allison’s Blog Post

I am working towards an MBE in the global medical innovation program. Additionally, I work at Brevitest on a point-of-care diagnostics device that currently offers COVID-19 antibody tests to allow individuals to optimize the timing of their booster shots.

The thing I’ve made that I am most proud of is a therapeutic knee brace that incorporated electronic elements to provide patients with compression, vibration, and temperature therapies. I built this prototype by myself in my apartment during the spring of 2020 as a part of my senior design capstone project at Cornell University. To do so, I had to learn how to fabricate a soldered circuit board to integrate the electrical elements, code a state machine in Arduino, and sewing techniques such as fabric draping using neoprene.

I really enjoy baking, especially cake decorating, so one thing I want to make is a cake that has electronic components such as moving parts or lights. The ultimate goal is to make a carousel cake that spins and has horses that move up and down, but I will probably start with a simpler mechanism such as a windmill.

I am taking this class because I want to learn a wider-breadth of prototyping skills. I am excited to learn how to use the CNC, as well as learn how to integrate various fabrication techniques into a single project.
