For this first project, we learned how to set up and use a sewing machine and measure and cut fabric to finally assemble a decent apron. This project required practicing different skills, such as understanding the inner workings of the machine, prepping our material, sewing box stitches, and leaving a seam allowance.
Step I: Measuring and Cutting
Beginning with the preparation of the apron, I measured across my chest, down my torso, around my waist, and from my chest to the top of my knee. I added 2in to account for seam allowance and used these measurements to cut out the length and shape of the apron.
Step II: Making the Seam Allowance
As part of the preparation, I folded, ironed, and pinned down the seam allowance. First, I did a 1/2 inch fold, then used an iron to go over it, then I folded again over itself and ironed again. Lastly, I pinned the fold in place. I repeated this process for all the sides of the apron.
Step III: Getting Sewing
Finally! After a couple hours, I got sewing! To accomplish my first seam, I set up the sowing machine by threading the bobbin and top thread. Then, I put my pinned fabric underneath the presser foot, put the presser foot down, and carefully pushed the pedal with my foot.
I repeated the process above to sew all the other sides of the apron.
Step IV: Adding the Straps
An apron wouldn’t be complete without straps. So, I pinned them in the desired spots and sew them onto the apron using a square stitch.
Step V: Clean-Up and Turn-In
Voilá! My first project of the semester is done. So, I cleaned up my area and set my labeled apron on the BIOE 555 designated area.
Cost Estimate:
- ~$10.00 per yard of fabric
- ~$3.00 on thread spindle (ivory)
- ~$2.00 on cotton straps
- ~10 hours of work
- Avg. rate of $13 per hour (Houston, TX)
Total: $141
