Holden’s Apron

Over the last two weeks I have been working on the apron project here at the OEDK. Overall, it was a frustrating project as the sewing machines constantly would break or something would go wrong.

To start, I got my piece of black fabric and decide I wanted a size M. I then sketched out the shape I wanted on a piece of paper which can be seen below.

Next, I placed the paper over my fabric and then cut the fabric to shape!

Then, I was able to use pins in order to create the seam shape I wanted like shown here.

Now that I had my fabric set up I went ahead and used the Juki machine to create my first stitch.

I definitely would not call my first stitch a success. It was a bit crooked and inconsistent.

However, my next stitches were a bit better and looked more consistent.

After finishing the seams, I moved on to attaching the neck strap like shown below. My box stitches were not ideal as the pressure foot on the machine I was using kept falling off 🙁

Finally, after completing the neck strap I then moved on to the side straps. However, as soon as I started to stitch, the needle on the machine fell off and got jammed

After switching machines (back to the one with the messed up pressure foot) I was finally able to attach the two straps. They may not look good but at least it doesn’t fall apart.

And I then had a final product!

My clean workspace for the final step…

Cost Breakdown…

1 yard of cheapest black fabric from Michaels – $1.99

5 yards of thread (I had lots of waste) – $0.06

5 hours of time at $15 per hour – $75

$10 of estimated overhead

Total: $79.04

Very expensive for a poorly made apron because I spent way longer than I should have because it was my first time using a sewing machine 🙁
