My idea was to create a simple pencil holder out of acrylic.
I arrived at this idea by playing around with a few of the different parts from the prototyping library in order to learn how to use the laser cutter and get a better feel for the different parts in the library. My original idea for the box was to create a frame using the 3d corner joints, and use a hinge joint for the lid, but that turned out to be far more complex than I anticipated.
My first attempt to create the box was rather unsuccessful because I had an issue with some of the joints breaking. I fixed a few small errant lines in the adobe file which were causing one of the problems and adjusted the settings and cut it again.
The second box turned out a lot better, but still not perfect. One of the hinges still broke, so I glued that one together. The box is made with hinges and the inside divider uses a lap joint. I had intended for the cross etched on the bottom face to fit the divider, but the connection with the other faces interfered. To solve this problem, I folded the box backwards and used the cross as a guide as to where to glue the divider.
The final product may not have been perfect, but it serves its function well.
