For this 2D drawing I decided to draw the Oil Pump-jack in Illustrator. Originally I tried using the image-trace feature to recreate the images straight from the scanned image. However, between the grid lines and the curvature of the page when it was being scanned I discovered that this was not the easiest way to create the drawing. Instead I made the pieces from scratch using the standard tools in Illustrator. Most of the pieces were fairly simple to reproduce once I figured out the best way to move forward. I would make the curved pieces with a circle of the desire diameter, then attach a line tangent to this circle in order to produce the remainder of the object. For the semicircular piece attached to another circle, I started with two full circles then used the shape-builder tool to combine them and remove the chunk of the large circle that wasn’t needed. As for the top middle piece I essentially started by creating a trapezoid with lines, then played with adding anchor points to get the necessary curve.
