I chose to replicate the drawings for the film advancing mechanism:
This device uses an offset crank to drive an arm that grabs and slides the film arm down before it returns as a counterweight pulls it back up to its initial position. The drawings in the book look like the following:
I replicated them by using pathfinder extensively. This tool allowed me to combine simple shapes into more complex ones without having to deal with piles of separate paths. I only used it’s two most basic functions: add too and subtract from shape area. It works like this:
The front shape can either be combined with the back or the overlap can be removed. In general, I added a series of circles, rectangles, and arcs together and subtracted the drill holes so that the entire part is a single shape. My final replication of the plans looks like this:
Since all the parts are each a single shape, it takes nothing more than flipping the fill and stroke to get a drawing that looks like this:
Ready to take to the laser cutter!
