During this assignment we learned how to use the laser cutter. Geetanjali, Paul and I worked together over the course of close to 5 hours to produce a good looking Rice fight owl. Here are Geetanjali and Paul working hard:
We produced owls of different sizes and materials, and learned how to alter the cut/engrave speed and power to match. Our final owl was cut from 3-ply wood. The speeds we used varied between 400 and 500 for engrave and 35 and 40 for cutting. Engrave and cut powers we used varied between 5 and 40. The 3 ply wood showed distinct shades of color better than the acrylic we cut. During our first two hours in the cutting room we produced 3 owls, but none had distinct colors. We booked the room for another 2 hours the next week and were able to produce our owl with the distinct colors. Here are some photos of the various owls. The first photo is our best owl.
One mistake we made was to entirely cut an owl rather than engrave any portions of it. While it was not the effect we were looking for, it still turned out pretty cool. Here is a photo of it!
Here is another owloedk logo that Paul made. Pretty spiffy!
