For this project I chose to recreate a ward lock and key. The design contains 4 major pieces, 3 of which belong to the ward and 1 being the key. The mechanism allows the key to move the latch plate and tumbler. Therefore, a careful drawing of the components is necessary in order to ensure proper operation.
In order for this to be achieved, I first created straight, rough outlines of the items, and then added circles to where curves existed. I then erased any extra lines in order to give the final product. The most difficult part was the small irregular triangle piece. This was because this part could not be drawn using conventional shapes which made it a lot more difficult.
I have also tried to draw my pieces directly (without scaffolding) and that simply does not work for these pieces.
One tool that was particularly useful was the grid tool. This allowed me to clearly visualize how large my pieces needed to be. Below, I have attached my AI file.
