CNC Civil Wars

For our last homework project, Peter and I were tasked with creating and cutting a design using the CNC machine. We used the Noun Project to find some designs, and generated a g-code file with said designs using the Easel program created by Inventables.

For our first design, we took the svg file of the Millennium Falcon from the Noun project (Millennium Falcon by Steve Morris from the Noun Project). We put it into Easel after removing the words on the bottom with Adobe illustrator. We set the cut depth and resized the design. Then we went under the Machine-> advanced tab and generated g-code to upload into the CNC program.

For the CNC machine, we used the FlashCutCNC4 program. We uploaded the g-code we created from Easel. Then we put in our block of machining wax and lined up our spindle. Our project took about an hour to cut the 3×3 inch design.

For our second try, we created a design inspired by the new upcoming Marvel movie, Captain America: Civil Wars. Again we used designs produced by The Noun Project: Iron Man Repulsor by Alen Krummenacher from the Noun Project and Shield by Alen Krummenacher from the Noun Project. We loaded the designs into Easel and generated g-code. For this iteration though, we changed the depth of the cut from 0.02 inches to 0.2 inches to save time. The total cut time took about an hour. After we cut the design we trimmed off the extra wood on the sides. sanded down the edges, and stained the wood.
