For this assignment, I picked number 68 from 507 mechanical movements. It featured two gears with one of the gears only have one spoke. This would allow the other gear to only move at a designated time interval. The picture below shows an example.
PROCEDURE FOR CREATION
The first step I took to creating a model of this was to download the image from the website and utilize the shape builder function in illustrator. I opted to this instead of trace because tracing doesn’t give accurate dimensions. It works better with figures that are not functional and more focused on aesthetics. I made the multi-spoke gear by making an asterisk with 5 rectangles and connecting them to a circle of smaller diameter. The other gear was made with a circle with a diameter that represented the final shape and a rectangle was connected to it for the single spoke. The area to the left and right of the rectangle was also trimmed to provided suitable space to prevent jamming. This method proved simple and effective and I was done in under an hour. The figure below is the design I drew.
Some issues I had while creating this design was the fitting of the spokes. I had to make sure that they would exactly fit into each other and thus to better accommodate that, I rounded the edges of all the edges on the gears. The indent on the one spoke gear also helps in preventing jamming to occur when the two gears connect to move.
COST ESTIMATION
Estimation of the cost for this design includes the cost of the illustrator license and labor. The license is about $20 a month and labor for an hour on average is $23. The average wage cost is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics for December 2018. The total cost for this would be $43.
