A Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a “Hello”

Things You Didn’t Know you Wanted to Know ABOUT ME

Hailing from planet Jupiter, this alien is fascinated by the intersection between art and engineering. Identifiable by the dresses she always wears, she can usually be found watching animated movies at 3am. Don’t worry about her overly formal text messages. She loves to joke around; she just needs sentences to be punctuated. She is an avid FL Panthers hockey fan, but a hockey stadium is the only cold she can tolerate. Kindly don’t point out the charcoal on her face.

Me on the ice where the Panthers play with their mascot Stanley!

For real though, my name is Summer. I am a sophomore at Duncan College, and I am originally from Jupiter, FL. I currently study mechanical engineering. I am also a visual artist, so the colors of a sunset or light filtering through trees often distracts me. Feel free to check out my work. I am interested in pursuing the boundary between engineering and art. Both disciplines are fundamentally creators, and the world would be boring if every structure was simply a roof with four walls or every car a box with four wheels. I haven’t found my specific path yet, but I am excited to explore!

This boot I made looks like a brain!

On campus I work as an intramural volleyball and floor hockey referee (NHL refs make it look easy). I volunteer as a physics fellow, and I am in the middle of applying to be a gallery guide at the Moody Center right now (fingers crossed).

Creations Past and Future

One thing I have made that I am proud of — okay so here’s the backstory. My family hired the same college age student to babysit me and my brother from the time I was in diapers until I was nine and moved from Michigan to Florida. Amanda is basically my older sister. A while back, she got married. For her wedding gift, I painted her and her husband using their engagement photos. When she opened it, she completely broke down into tears. Art can evoke such strong emotions, and witnessing my audience experience something so heartfelt is the greatest reward in the world.

She looked so beautiful in her grandmother’s wedding dress!

Though this wheelchair tennis racket contraption from ENGI 120 is a close second.

One thing I want to make in the future is something MASSIVE. I think it would be so exciting to create a 20ft piece of public art. It could be a sculpture or a mural on the wall of a building. Just something so resoundingly permanent that it can’t be moved.

For ENGI 210, I am most excited about learning how to use the CNC machine. There seem to be so many cool and intricate things made possible by some of these precision tools. I can’t wait to design some crazy new pieces!
