Hello! My name is Katy and I’m a BIOE masters student with the Global Medical Innovation program. I’m originally from Norman, Oklahoma and did my undergrad in biomedical engineering at the University of Iowa. While this is my first week on campus in Houston, I went with a number of people in my cohort to Costa Rica this summer for internships and to gain experience in needs finding and medical device innovation.
I am proud of the ultrasound system I worked on in my senior year. We learned the ins and outs of ultrasound technology and I wrote a program to identify our specific parameters. It was an area I was previously unfamiliar with, so finishing out the course with a successful proof of concept was great!
I’m hoping to go into medical device new product development, so I’m hoping that the experiences I have with the machines in class will serve me well when I’m in industry needing to create prototypes for my projects. I hope to create something using the laser cutter.
I hope to learn the proper terminology to be used for the various machines we use in class. I’m sure that this will serve me well in a job following graduation, so I’m looking forward to learning that now while my mistakes won’t have as large of an impact.
