Dante’s Apron Project

This week I worked on creating my own apron using the OEDK sewing machines. I had never used a sewing machine prior to this project, so it took a little bit of figuring out. The first thing I did was take the drafting paper and measure it out to a standard apron size. I used scissors to cut the outline of the apron out. I also decided to have rounded armholes instead of flat ones.

Once the paper was cut out, I took my fabric and used masking tape to secure the paper on top. I used scissors to cut the fabric out, until my apron had the same shape as the paper.

I then drew a line 1/2″ from the edge around the entire apron, as this would become my seam. I also measured and cut my neck strap and side ties to length.

Then I began sewing the apron. I had to play with the bobbin a little bit to make it work, but eventually I figured it out. I started with sewing the seam, and I got better at making straight, continuous lines over time.

Once the seam was stitched, I started sewing on the straps using a box stitch method. I had to research this method, and eventually found that creating a double stitch may be better and stronger than a single one.

Finally I sewed on a pocket with faux leather and it was finished!

Cost analysis:

Fabric: $20 (Based on ~$15 per yard cost of fabric)

Pocket: $5

Straps: $5

Total: $30.
