Making this apron was a fun way to get back into sewing after a several year long hiatus for seamstress extraordinaire Lindsey Russ (one time she hemmed a dress and now she’s convinced she can do anything). The process started out pretty slow: measuring out and cutting the material took quite a bit of time!! But, things soon picked up as she got into a rhythm, matching the clicks of the sewing machine to the bpm of the whatever song she was listening to on her “assorted vibes” spotify playlist.

I ended up with a 30” x 20” piece of fabric, (slightly smaller than the smallest size for a snug fit and because the $10 target mirror has warped my self perception of how thin I am), full of fun festive Christmas colors!! To spice things up a little bit, I added in a little breast pocket, well suited to holding a pencil or something of a similar size. Since some cheaper fabrics cost $15 per yard, we can estimate the price of the materials to be around $15.
Cutting out my design took around 15 minutes, and I then spent around an hour and a half putting the rest of it all together. Pricing my labor at $20 an hour (giving myself a solid above minimum wage, as a high value worker), the cost of my labor is $35. This hour included some gorgeous box stitches to attach the ribbons onto the fabric, as well as meticulous planning out and then making and sewing on the dainty, yet refined breast pocket. The edges of the apron are all folded in to give it a smooth finish, and the plaid design gives it a homey feel.
Overall, this puts the apron at a cost of $55. Would you pay $55 for this apron??? I certainly wouldn’t. But it was very fun to make 🙂
