Goal: create 2 finger casts
Time: 11/4, 11/10
Creation process
- Molding
Following the tutorial, we measured 37.5g alginate powder and 150g water then used a popsicle stick to string and mix. Once the mixture achieved a smooth texture, I put my fingers in the cup and start a 10 mins timer. After the alginate mixture has solidified (less than 10 mins), I moved my finger out. (my cute teammate on the right waiting for the mold to solidify)
- Casting
Following the 2:1 plaster-to-water tutorial, we measured 20mL of water and mixed it with 40 mL of plaster powder. After stirring, I pour it into the mold. After the mold is filled, I used tape to help place the nail to stay still in the cast. I came back the next day to check the result, then repeat the process for the other cast.
- Learnings
- Post-processing
I slightly pulled the extra plaster out then applied one coat of crystal clear spray for aesthetic & more protection since the fingers felt fragile and easily broke. Final result:
Cost Analysis
Materials:
Molding and Casting Powder Kit (500g): $19.99 / 500 * 40 * 3 (four fingers) = ~4.8$
Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Spray Paint (color and clear coat): $6.98 * 1/10 * 3 = ~$2.09
Labor:
Molding and Casting: 0.5 hours + 0.5 hours
Post-processing: 1 hour
2 hours * $16 (Rice minimum wage per hour) = $32
TOTAL COST: $4.8 + $2.09 + $32 = $38.89
