I Broke my Finger

This was my first time working with any type of molding or casting system.

For my mold I used a 4-1 ration of alginate to water the first time around and then waited approximately 10-15 min for the mixture to set and start to solidify around my finger.

Once I made the mold I poured my plaster in which I mixed in a 2-1 ratio. The next step I took was to place the screw through a piece of tape and lay it across the top of the cup to ensure that the screw ended up strait in my finger. I poured my plaster mix into the mold and after 45min I tried to pull out the finger I molded, however it broke.

This was more detrimental than I thought because I was unable to get the broken pieces out of my mold without completely destroying my mold.

After destroying my first finger mold I made myself a new one. I used the same alginate to water ratio of 4-1 and remixed a new batch for my next mold.

This mold came out well just like the first one. I also had to make new batch of plaster which like my first attempt came out well however this time I made sure to add a little bit less water to help mitigate it breaking on me. The biggest different I did this time was I tried to put more of the screw into the mold to try and get a better grip on the finger when I try to pull it out.

After waiting for the plaster to dry with the screw in it I came back and this time was successful in pulling my first finger free.

After successfully completing the first finger I then mixed a new batch of plaster to pour into my mold. This second batch came out very similarly to the batch right before it and I was able to get my finger out successfully.

After making my two fingers I then applied a clear coat after they had dried up a little.
