CNC coffee

I chose to make a coffee cup design for this project. I started out by choosing a file that would work well on CNC machine from thenounproject.

After that I processed the file in Carbide create in order to generate the g-code that will be sent to the CNC machine. I determined that I wanted to create pockets of equal depth (0.25in) in all of the spaces except for the center circle which was set to 0.5 inches in depth.

After the wood was cut with the CNC machine, I noticed that one of them was cut thicker than the other. Because the wood was not quite as thick, the CNC started “cutting” above the actual wood. This resulted in it not cutting all the way through. I fixed this by sanding it down until the piece was released. But this made the wood thinner so I also sanded down the other one so they could be close to identical.

I then painted the wood black on the edges and white over the big surfaces. I am planning to make a wooden frame that these can be fixed to and hung on the wall by my espresso machine!

COST ANALYSIS

  • 4 Pack Unfinished Wood (4×8″) = $18
  • Cost to Use a CNC Mill per hour = $30
  • Acrylic Paint = $10
  • Labor (5hrs x $20/hr) = $100
  • TOTAL = ~$158
