Beginning of the Journey – Rubik’s Cubes

Hello I’m Lulu, a Chemical Physics major student also pursuing the Engineering Design minor. My majors reflect how I like to learn just a little bit of everything. Currently I’m working as a Tech TA and part of the Rice Taiwanese association.

The photo you see shows one of my proudest achievements – building a working Rubik’s cube in Minecraft. I combined two of my favorite interests at the time and created a tangible product. Well, it’s not exactly physically tangible.

A project I’ve been thinking of for a long time is designing my own Rubik’s cube. I have tried and somewhat successfully 3D-printed a Rubik’s cube, a Mirror cube and a Fisher cube (variations of the Rubik’s cube). However, all of these cubes have the same internal structure and twist in the same way. I’m looking to design a Rubik’s cube that had a complete different spinning pattern such as the Megaminx. So I’m looking forward to learn more about mechanisms and 3D modelling in Engi 210 so I can gain the knowledge I for this new cube.
