Metal Cutting!

Introduction

This was my first time using the water jet cutter, and really my first time making anything with metal, so I enjoyed working with a new machine.

Process

I started with the given diamond file, and added a star icon. I took inspiration from Madison, who had the idea to separate the shape and create a slot so that one side could stand up on the other. I matched the width of the slot to the thickness of the metal.

On my first cut, I ended up using a different sheet of steel than the one I had measured, so the slot was too small. I remeasured, then went back and fixed the file. I cut the shape again, and it did not work this time either. Still too small. I made the slots bigger yet again time, and it worked this time! So I cut my second diamond before beginning post processing.

I used the sand blaster to prime the metal for painting, then added my vinyl sticker to cover the edges of the small triangle (the base) before spraying a coat of white paint over my diamond, then peeling away the sticker.

Cost Estimate

1 sheet of steel: $15

Vinyl: negligible

1 can spray paint: $6

3 hours labor: $30

Total: $51
