As an introduction to molding and casting, we made finger hooks.
Steps:
- First, I mixed alginate using a 1:1 ratio with water.
- After mixing thoroughly, I submerged two fingers in the mixture.
- Then, I waited ~ 5 minutes for the alginate to set, and promptly removed my fingers.
- Then, I mixed plaster of paris using a 2:1 ratio with water.
- After the plaster was an appropriately thick consistency, I poured it into the finger holes.
- Using screws poking through a circular cardboard cutout, I submerged the heads into the wet plaster.
- After waiting overnight for it to dry, I finally sprayed a clear coat finish.
Cost Analysis:
- Alginate – $7.01 / 13 oz bag
- Plaster of Paris – $8.28 / 4 lbs bucket
- Screws – $0.02 / wood screw
I realized that I never really understood that the fingers should’ve been curved if I actually wanted to use them as hooks. So I essentially have regular finger screws.
