Axolotls

For my CNC project, I decided to carve axolotls. I downloaded a simple outline of the axolotl from the noun project website and then converted it to an svg file so that I can open it in carbide create.

Using the Nomad CNC machine:

  1. First, I had to measure the wood I was using to ensure that the shape is carved correctly.
    1. Then, I adjusted the settings accordingly in the software.
    2. Then, I used double-sided tape to fix the wood onto the CNC platform.
  2. With the axolotl shape imported into carbide create, I was now able to select the carving paths.
  3. I set a contour path around the outer outline of the axolotl that runs through to the bottom of the wood
    1. I added two tabs on the top and bottom to keep the wood from becoming loose during carving.
  4. I set various 0.1” – 0.15” deep contour paths and pockets to give the shape more overall depth and texture.
    1. I was able to fit two axolotls on one piece of wood to reduce time and material costs.

Overall, I regret not spending more time on setting the carving paths and really visualizing what each path would do. If I could remake the design, I would make is so the face is a pocket and use a smaller bit for a contour that will emphasize on the design details such as the hands and tail.

Post Processing:

I applied minimal post-processing methods.

First I sanded off the rough edges and worked up to a sanding grit of 1000.

Then, I applied a single light coat of clear enamel to give it a nice finish.

Cost:

  • Wood: 2 x 4 x 8 inch pine ~ $0.26
  • Time: $7.25 x 2 hours = $14.50

TOTAL COST: $14.76
