CNC Sharingan!

This project has been the most successful out of the all of the homework in the semester! I got to learn multiple programs to help me visualize and cut with the CNC machine. This is also very translational with the work I do because of the capabilities of the CNC that I didn’t learn in individual research (that I had to do outside of work if I wanted to learn it).

The first step was to create the file on the Carbide Create program that was essentially a 2D slicing program equivalent for CNC, as PrusaSlicer is for the 3D printer, but only in one layer. Then the program has settings of either “Contour” or “Pocket” that will then count as the three dimensional cuts of the project.

Setup:

Start from .SVG and get .gcode. Then place .gcode into carbide motion to communicate with the actual machine. Initialize the machine and use the zero tool in order to maintain upmost accuracy. Press Go!

Bad resolution picture of my toolpath.

Next was waiting for the CNC. 15 minutes isn’t too bad.

Cut was successful. See through on the bottom of the wood is acceptable.

   Final product!

Cost Breakdown:

Time on machine: $0 (If wanted one) A machine would cost $3000

Wood: $1.75 for one long plank

Paint: $16 for black and red paint cans

Labor: 2hrs X $15 = $30

Total Cost: $47.75 for both since it was one plank of wood.

If I wanted to buy the machine: $3047.75 (Maybe in the future if I see a need or business venture)
