Hello world! My name’s Margo, and I’ll be taking ENGI 210 at Rice this fall. I’m a senior double majoring in Linguistics and Anthropology, and (hopefully) minoring in Engineering Design, and I am a LOUD PROUD JONESIAN!!!!! I am a DJ at KTRU, Rice’s radio station, and I curate the entire musical selection for the station too. When I’m not in class, I am chronically on my bike. I also tend to several plants, a mild caffeine addiction, and an ever-growing pile of books.
I have some experience with tinkering through Lego, ENGI 220, and archaeology, and like to give everything a try at least once. Currently, I’m hand-sewing patches onto a jean jacket of mine. Most of these patches were given to me by friends of mine in the local music scene, and I’m excited to see them all in one place.
One thing I’m proud of making is a hole in the ground. I was a part of an archaeological excavation funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities where we were digging in Zambia for Iron Age artifacts. We found quite a bit, including a fully intact tortoise skeleton. Here is a picture of me in the pit we dug during the field season. The pit is six meters deep!
I’m a big fan of Adam Savage and Simone Giertz, and any chance I get to create like them is a good chance indeed.
My goal in this course is to learn more about the machines in the OEDK, and hopefully become confident enough with one or several of them to lay the groundwork for a very proficient toolshed in the future.
