Having no prior experience using a sewing machine or even working with fabric in general my main goal of this project was to just have a functional apron. First, I began by taking my measurements and working on creating a pattern. After a lot of trial and error I finally had a shape that I was happy with, and I began to cut my actual apron fabric. I took my time to try and ensure that the cuts were straight and mostly symmetrical.
Now the hard part began, actually using the sewing machine. I struggled to just set up the machine but after 10 minutes I got thread through the needle and was ready to start. I decided to sew the neck strap on first so that I could make sure the apron hung at my desired height. My first sew did not go too well and took a lot longer than it should of but I had attached the first side of the neck strap to the apron. Since the area I was sewing was so small, I opted to use the hand wheel from now on as the pedal resulted in quick jumps forward which led to sloppy looking stitches.
The other side of the neck strap went much smoother and looks neater as well.
The last thing I wanted to do was to sew the two straps on the sides to be able to tie the apron around my body. Sewing these on was a bit easier as I was starting to get used to using the machine but there are still a lot of improvements that can be made such as making my stitches straighter as well as cleaning up the edges of the apron.
Now with the side straps attached, I had a finished apron that was only a little bit embarrassing to look at. For my first project involving a sewing machine I am proud of the fact that I have something functional to show for my efforts.
Cost Analysis:
Operation of Machine | $15/hr | 3 hours | = $45
Checkered Fabric | ~$10 | 1 yard
Thread | ~$0.50
Side Straps | $8 | 8ft
Total = $63.50
