Board Box Building Business

This week we got into some box building. I am way more familiar with drills, sanders and saws than I am with a sewing machine so I was pretty confident that this was gonna be a more straightforward process for me, and it was!

Cut up boards, sanded and ready for assembly

Santi and I were done with the cutting of the wood boards to length fairly quickly and got to sanding and assembling the first parts of the box.

I actually forgot to take some pictures of the first steps of the assembly but I can tell you we started a little on the wrong foot by screwing in the long 14.5″ boards into the shorter 12″ ones, instead of the other way around.

After we got our base assembled we moved on pretty quickly to sanding some rough edges left behind by routing. We then came back to the workbenches inside to continue assembling the box by screwing in the sides.

After finishing assembly, we sanded the box down one more time to remove any hard edges or sections sticking out too much, after which we proceeded to stain the outside of the box with wax polish and the inside with teak oil to protect the box and give it something a little different.

Waxing the box

In the end, after letting the waxed and oiled box dry, we came back a couple of days later to check it out and liked how it looked but it felt a little rougher with the coatings on so we used a high grit sander (600 grit) to smooth it out a little without taking off the coatings. Santi and I were pretty satisfied with the result, and I never got to work with wood or a router before so that was pretty new.
