This time in BIO 555 Cosette and Eric build a box for the first time!
The materials that were required for this assignment were:
- 9 x 14.5” long pieces of 1×4 lumber
- 6 x 12” long pieces of 1×4 lumber
- 4 x 10-11” long pieces of 2×2 lumber
- corner clamp
- table clamp
- drill
- ⅛” drill bit (for pilot hole)
- Philips head driver
- 60 and 100 grit sandpaper
- wood stain/spray paint
- brush
- router
The first step of this journey was to cut the wood into pieces. We used a fast method for cutting the planks. This method consisted in measuring the plank, cutting it, measuring it once again and then we used this plank at the end of a miter saw table.
After cutting our planks, we were ready to start working!
The next step was to start assembling our box. For this step we used a corner clamp with some table clamps.
First, we started making our 4 sides of the box. We drilled holes in planks of the using 1×4 lumber.
Once we drilled the holes, we used the countersink drill in order to fit the screws better. Some of the problems that we experienced were that the wood planks were not good quality so that affected out countersink drilling.
Now we were able to put the screws in the planks and to join the corners!
We did this 3 times and then we used the orbit sander and sanding paper in order to make the planks smoother.
Once we had our 3 frames, we also made the bottom of the box. The planks that we were going to used went through a sanding process in order to fit them inside the frame.
We did the same for the 4 planks of 2×2 lumber.
After having our 4 planks smooth and at the right level, we were ready to assembly!
We did the same drilling hole process to each side and we inserted the screws.
Also, we used some of the scrap planks as a support for the frames. Then we did more sanding to the areas that needed it.
.
The last step was to paint our box and for this process we used a brush and wood oil stain. We waited around 15 min to apply another layer.
Now we have a crate!!!!
Finally, I made the cost model for this box.
