Molding and Casting Fingers

For this project I molded two of my fingers using an alginate powder mixture, and then casted them with plaster of paris.

I decided to make it easier by using one of the larger cups so I could mold two fingers at the same time. I used a 1:1 water ratio for the alginate powder, and a 2:1 water ratio for the plaster. After letting the alginate powder mixture set, I then filled them in with plaster of paris, and placed the screws on top. The plaster was thick enough that I did not have to use tape or string to hold the screws up. I accidentally poured in a bit too much plaster, causing the molds to overflow, so I had to clean up a bit so they wouldn’t cast together.

After about 30 minutes I removed them from the mold, spray painted them gray, and added a clear gloss after. There were a few cavities where I believe air got trapped during the casting, but they came out very cleanly otherwise.
