BOO!

Choosing and Preparing my File

For this assignment, my task was to CNC an object of my choosing. After browsing the noun project for a bit, I settled on a cartoon ghost. To make my file simpler to CNC, I removed some of the vectors of the eyes and the outline. I then created a pocket cut for the main part of the ghost, and adjusted the eyes so that they weren’t merged into one blob. I then added a circle around my ghost and contour cut it.

Original file with circle around it, I deleted some of the additional lines on the ghost to make it easier to cut

Had to move eyes and and change the size to make sure they didn’t merge

CNC-ing my Object

After setting up my file, I prepped the machine and set up my wood. Before adding double sided tape, I wiped it with IPA and a kimwipe to make sure it would stick. My first cut went mostly okay, except some of the wood chipped because the circle was a little too close to the edge.

I adjusted the size slightly and cut the next one successfully, However, after checking the assignment doc again I realized that I had to cut the outline of my shape instead of just doing a circle around it, so I modified my file and cut two new ghosts.

Finishing

To finish my part, I wanted to stain the outside and then put white resin in the pocket cut. I started by sanding the parts, then stained the wood. One came out slightly patchy, so after it dried I sanded it off to try again. I then dyed the epoxy white with spray paint and added it to the ghosts.
