My Diamond Shape

Hey everyone, today I am going to share my metal cutting and post processing experience. I designed the Turkish flag on the diamond shape that is provided to us using Adobe Illustrator.

Then I went to machine shop to print two copies of the design. After carefully reading the instructions, I chose the location on the metal to cut my piece and started the cutting.

Since the moon and stars have sharp corners I had to change some settings which decreased the size of the moon and star a bit to avoid it from breaking or cutting in a undesirable way.

Then, I started to post-process my piece. Using the angle grinder to grind the bottom surface of my pieces and used a file to final down the internal edges.

Before spray painting my pieces, I asked a lab assistant to access to the sand blaster then I tried to create clean surfaces for my pieces.

I continued with spray painting my pieces with red paint. First I painted one side and waited until it gets dry so that I can print the opposite surfaces. I came back after 4-5 hours to print the other side. After printing the opposite side as well I left it to dry over the night and planning to take my pieces in the morning. However I realized that the opposite faces weren’t completely dry to they stuck on the fabric that I put under my pieces. So, I had to spray paint the ugly looking face once again.

This is how it looks at the end:

Cost analysis:

Time (10$ per hour): 10×6 = 60$

Plasma cutter: 5$

Angle grinder: 1$

Sand Blaster: 3$

Material (2$ per piece) : 2×2 = 4$

Total = 73$
