Hi everyone! My name is Marc, and I am currently a senior at McMurtry College majoring in Bioengineering and minoring in Global Health Technologies. At McMurtry, I am very involved in planning social events for the college.
I am from Baytown, Texas, which is about 30 minutes away from Houston, but really 40-50 minutes away if you consider the traffic. Outside of class, I enjoy bouldering (indoor rock climbing), pickleball (controversial, but I think it’s more fun than tennis), and trying new food spots!
I chose to take this class because I want to learn more about different engineering tools. I’ve worked in the OEDK plenty of times, but I’ve only needed to use the 3D printers and electronics lab. With so many other tools, like the CNC machine and laser cutter, I felt like I was missing out. Some things that I want to learn and make include: clothes/sewing, refined metal parts, and laser cutting wooden pieces. After taking this class, I believe that I will have a stronger understanding of all the tools in the OEDK!

One of my proudest creations – Here’s an Ambient Temperature and Humidity Monitor I got to make for Rice360’s Global Health Department with the help of the 3D printers and electronics lab!
I am very passionate about medical devices and innovation. After 5-10 years, I see myself working at a medical device company, likely in the research and development sector. I think that this class will help me succeed in roles like this and am looking forward to all of the projects!
