Hello everyone! My name is Kory Sila, and I’m a sophomore at Lovett College studying Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Engineering Design. At Rice, I am currently involved in undergraduate research, Rice Robotics (Rover Mech Team), Rice ASME, Rice NSBE, and as H&D Food Rep for Lovett (I love food). Outside of extracurriculars and classes I enjoy watching and playing sports, cooking, and learning about anything tech or space related. (Almost completed Rice Robotics Rover CAD shown below)
Throughout the past engineering design courses (Engineering 120/200) I was able to create some really awesome stuff, but the creation I have been most proud about was the bCPAP (bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) Monitor, which was able to detect and alert when there was bubbling in a Pumani bCPAP, improving the effectiveness of neonatal bCPAP treatment. This project was especially cool not just because it helped me build electrical engineering, programming, and prototyping skills that are incredibly useful, but also because of the impact a device like this could have in the future. (Engi 200 Project Poster shown below)
Something small scale that I’d like to make this semester is a table/cabinet for my 3D printer at home. The area where this table needs to go requires some decently specific dimensions but the main reason I want to make the table myself is so I have a table platform that can lower or rise, which I think would be pretty cool.
In Engi 210, one area I’d like to learn more in is Advanced Manufacturing methods like using the CNC, Markforged, and more. I think that learning how to proficiently use these tools would open up the opportunity to take on more difficult and complex projects.
