Got a se-crate, can you keep it?

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my BLOGGGG POSTTTT!!! I worked on a wooden crate with Kory this week to create a stained indoor-style crate. We spent 6-7 hours in total on this project following a process of

planing each piece of wood -> joining the wood -> sanding each piece with 120 Grit -> sanding with 320 Grit -> staining the wood -> assembling the pieces -> placing a nameplate

First, we used the planar to remove any marks on the wood and clear out any imperfections at first. It took a little time to get used to using the machine and not remove too many pieces from it. After planing all the wood. We decided to start joining the wood and at first this was a long process. Before the crate project  I had never worked with a drill  and so I relied on my partner a lot until I got better. Kory was so helpful in letting me practice until I got comfortable with pre-drilling and putting in screws but I always let him countersink lol. Eventually, I got the hang of it and I was pre-drilling and drilling the screws pretty comfortably.

After we joined the wood into rectangles, we decided to sand them until they were smooth. We first used 120 Grit on the sander for a while to make sure the pieces were smooth. After sanding, we didn’t experience any splinters and continued until we sanded all the pieces. After all the pieces were sanded, we decided to go in with 320 grit to make finishing touches and round the edges. I was really happy with this process since we sanded a lot to make sure our crate was as smooth as possible.

Next, we stained the wood which was a pretty quick process since we started cleaning off the stain almost immediately. After, we decided to let the pieces dry overnight and finish our assembly the following day.

The last day, we spent an hour assembling all the pieces together and adding our name plates. This process was really fun and I definitely feel more comfortable picking up a drill and making something.

Lastly, I have been taught since I was a kid to always leave a space cleaner than you found it. After putting away the left over materials we vaccummed and made sure the space was clean and so here is a photo of that.
