This week’s assignment was to mold and cast my finger as a wall hook, and be able to make two copies of it.

Starting off, I used alginate mold powder and water to make the mold of my finger. I used the proportions on the sheet to make sure that the mold would set properly. After the mixture was mixed, I stuck my index finger into the mold. The mixture solidified around my finger. After, I used a mixture of rockite powder and water to create the actual finger hook. I poured that mixture into the indented alginate mold powder, placed a nail in it, attached that nail to a stabilize it in the rockite powder, and wait 24 hours for it to set and dry.

After 24 hours, I came back and took the finger out of the mold. Since we had to make a copy of the finger using the same mold, I did exactly that and used the same mixture and proportions to make a copy of the finger.

After an additional 24 hours, I took the second finger out of the mold. The base was a little bit messy, as the rockite mixture had leaked out and was not uniform. I used a file and lightly filed off the edges so that both fingers would look identical and uniform.

After that, I spray-painted the fingers silver because I really liked the color. However, I thought it would look cool if I layered it with a matte top coat, as that would retain the color, but the texture would be different.

The final result was two metallic matte fingers. I am pleasantly suprised with the final result, as I think they look very cool! I was also suprised on how relatively simple the entire process was. The most meticulous part was making sure that the measurements for the pours were correct.
