Hello! Here is the process I went through to create wall hooks in the form of my fingers!
I first started by making a mold of my index and middle finger in class. I mixed 6.75 ounces of water with 1.5 ounces of alginate by weight and stirred it still. It was even and had no chunks. I then stuck my fingers into the mixture and waited for it to harden while my partner, Katrina, mixed the Rockite mixture together. After the silicone mold hardened, I poured in the Rockite and placed screws that were connected to a jig so that it could be screwed into places.
After the Rockite hardened in the mold, I took it out to post process. The fingers turned out pretty good overall. The nails were a bit strange due to the fact that I had long nails, but the Rockite mixture didn’t fully flow into the tip of the nails. Thus, I sanded the nails down as evenly as I could.
I then sanded the lip of the fingers because some solution had flowed over the edge of the finger mold hole.
After the finger was sanded, I used glossy red spray paint to finish it. I took it outside and sprayed multiple thin coats to preserve the fingerprint texture of the fingers. I chose red because I felt that it would be interesting and eye-catching. It would also make it kind of look like muscles.
In general, I had fun doing this project! I didn’t really enjoy the feeling of my finger in the silicone, but other than that, it was enjoyable!
