Whittle by Whittle: An Owl Emerges

For this CNC homework, I knew I wanted to make something simple but cute. As my time at Rice comes to an end, I decided to use this opportunity to create a little memento for myself. So I found this cute outline of an owl on the Noun project.

After downloading the .svg, I created the carbide create file and added two different cuts. The first was a pocket cut (0.1” depth) to create the internal carvings of the owl’s face. The second was a contour cut made around the outline of the owl, with an offset around the outer shape (depth of the contour cut was set to the thickness of the wood). I used the 1/8” bit for both toolpaths.

After uploading the file in Carbide Motion, I proceeded to follow the instructions to set up and calibrate the Nomad. Here is a picture of the probing process:

Then, I began the cut:

As for post-processing methods, I sanded all the cut edges and made the finished piece smooth to the touch.

I wanted to maintain the natural wood color, because I really loved how it looked. So I decided to use a beeswax finish to improve the finished texture.

Here is my finished product (+ its duplicate):
