Who are you and what activities are you engaged in at Rice?
Hi everyone, my name is Steven. I am a sophomore from Baker majoring in Mechanical Engineering and pursuing a minor in Engineering Design. I am involved with different aspects of Baker culture, such as the intramural sports and the merch committee. I am also currently a lab assistant at the OEDK. I started during the 2025 spring semester.
What is one thing that you have made that you are proud of
One thing I have made that has made me proud is a wooden bookshelf. I made it when I was 16. It was a great introductory woodworking project with not too much complexity. It has sentimental value and does the job for pictures, books, and other miscellaneous items in my room. Overall one of my favorite constructions.
What is one thing that you want to make (this semester or in the future)?
One thing I would like to make this semester is a wooden cutting board (but like a nice one). It would be a great addition to the apartment I am living in and for the future. It would contain patterns, symbols, and other markings that resonate with me. Hopefully, something that will last a while.
What is one thing that you hope to learn in ENGI 210
One thing I plan to learn in EDES 210 is to become proficient in woodworking. Though I am familiar with numerous machines in the wood shop and on the floor of the OEDK, I would like to explore this area of expertise further. This would provide a solid foundation for any other woodworking endeavors I pick up later, such as tables, picture frames, chairs, etc. I am incredibly excited to use the tools provided at the OEDK.
