Eva’s First Blog Post!

Hello! My name is Eva Woodman and I’m double majoring in Cognitive Science and Visual Art with a minor in Engineering Design. I love taking all sorts of classes at Rice, from painting to computer science courses. Outside of class, I am an active member and officer of Rice Dance Theatre! I love training and performing with the girls on the team.
A recent thing I have made that I am proud of is this painting I made over the summer. After starting college, it’s been difficult to find time for my personal art, especially when it feels less important than graded assignments. After my grandfather’s passing, working on this painting helped me reconnect with who I am outside of Rice, and
I am proud to have put so much energy into a personal project.

In the future, I really want to collaborate with other engineering students who have experience with mechanics/electronics. I want to help bring someone’s technical design to life with my experience in art and sewing. A personal project I want to make happen is a cover for the overhead light in my dorm quad. The overhead lighting is quite harsh, almost like a hospital or an asylum. I love the designs from the company Tulip Shades (they use a renter-friendly magnetic frame which attaches to the ceiling and lets the user interchange shades!), but my budget is slightly smaller than the $200 price tag. I think I could definitely make my own shade using the prototyping techniques we learn in ENGI 210!
By the end of this class, I hope to become fully comfortable with 3D modeling and printing. When I have an idea, I want to be able to create it immediately without being paralyzed by struggling with the technical aspects. I’m excited to learn the machines I have never used before, including the waterjet and the laser cutter!
I can’t wait to meet everyone!
