For our first homework, we have to create something using the hand sewing techniques we learned in class. Since I do have some previous experience in hand-sewing, I decided to attempt to make the sunglasses case!
Step 1: Collected all the materials needed. I grabbed two fabrics, cotton sheet, template, scissors, chalk, needle, pins, seam ripper, threading aid, thimble, and a set of snaps.
Step 2: Traced template onto both fabric pieces using chalk. Cut template to be 0.5 inches smaller on each side, then traced new template onto cotton sheet. (Because we want to give some room for the seam allowance.) And cut them out!
Step 4: Take the two fabric pieces and fold the rectangular part in half with the right side facing inward. Pined the fabrics down so they align nicely and do not move.

Step 5: Sew the edges of the folded rectangles! I used a whip stitch since I find it to be neater. Also, I found the denim fabric to be slightly tougher to push the needle through so I used the thimble to help apply more force and not hurt myself!

Step 6: Now I flipped the denim fabric so the right side is facing outside and placed it inside the black fabric. Then pin the top flaps of both fabrics together, and sewed them together using the whip stitch.

Step 7: I then maneuvered the fabric so the denim was facing the outside and the black fabric was on the inside. I place the cut cotton sheet between the two layers to act as as padding for the sunglasses inside the case. And using a back stitch, I sewed the two fabrics together on the top to seal the cotton sheet on the inside. I had originally used purple thread, but playing along with the denim vibe, I used a yellow thread for the back stitch.

Step 8: After lining up where I wanted the snaps to go, I used thread to sew the snaps to their spot.

FINISHED!! Now my sunglasses case is complete!

And of course, after every project, you must clean up your space so the next person using it is able to use it and because we are good citizens of the OEDK!

While I was able to create this at no extra cost out of my pocket, it did cost the class and the OEDK to provide the materials.
Cost Analysis:
- Materials:
- Denim Fabric (1 yard) – $9.99
- Thread (2 spools) – $6.98
- Snaps – $3.49
- Cotton Roll – $9.99
- Labor:
- Slightly above Minimum Wage (4 hours at $10) – $40
- Tools:
- Sewing Set – $5.99
Total Costs for the Sunglasses Case would be about $76.44!!!
Thank you to the OEDK and this class for providing all the material, so in reality for me, the only cost I had was my time.
